Scott Flansburg

For those of you that think being able to do large math problems in your head faster than a calculator is impossible, you need to know about Scott Flansburg. Scott, actually John, Flansburg is known as the human calculator. He is famous for many things involving math probably the biggest is being able to beat the fastest ten key operators in addition, and he does it all in his head.

Scott was born in New York as an ordinary kid, nothing super extraordinary just normal everyday youngster. At around the age of 9, he started realizing he had a sort of gift. He was able to easier ways and faster ways to do the same old everyday math you learn as a kid. He often refers to his first encounter with this. The teacher was teaching basic addition of double digit numbers and carrying the digits from the ones to the tens. Scott says he was goofing around in the back and the teacher must have noticed, because he was called up to the front and given the chalk (or marker). He was asked to do the problem for the class. He had no idea what to do because he wasn't listening, and maybe for him that was a good thing, he may have never realized his talent. So he stared at the two digit math problem with something like 4 different numbers and in his head going from left to right (instead of right to left and carrying) gave the teacher the correct answer.

The teacher was kind of puzzled and asked how he did it without writing and carrying. He simple said (this is just an example, well say the numbers were)

    20 + 30 is 50 +50 is 100 + 40 is 140 + 3 is 143 + 7 is 150 + 2 is 152 + 9 is 161 Thats how he did it and it probably changed his life forever.

    He began trying to solve other problems making them easier and easier until today he is recognized as one of the fastest in the world.

    Today he goes around the world as a motivational speaker teaching young students to enjoy math. His speed and his approach gets children involved and gives them an appreciation for numbers. He is able to show them how numbers fall into patterns and between that and his rapid beat the calculator demonstrations, the kids begin to enjoy a subject that so many others do not.
